Exploded isometric drawing, with board cut plan below.
Early concept sketch.
Unfolded isometric drawing with interior sections.
Unlike the previous design prompt, this assignment introduced new physical constraints, which required students to plan carefully before entering the fabrication process. Provided a finite amount of material and asked to use all of it in their design of another 6 inch cube, students returned with diagrams of their projects and cut plans for the 2x4 wood planks provided. This model in particular exercised careful arrangement of its components in order to create a pleasing composition via the wood's signature characteristic: grain. Every attempt was made to hide or minimize natural imperfections in the wood while highlighting the clean grain patterns inherent in the particular plank.
