SHADOWPLAY

Carrying forward the basic gestures of 'Fertility', Shadowplay was a response to a prompt which called for a space versatile enough to allow both solo and group activities, in a courtyard near the studio which has not been refreshed in some time. After identifying some key characteristics which weakened the existing space, the design was driven further by geometric analysis of the sun path over the San Luis Obispo area, and programmatic zones which were necessary for the courtyard to accommodate. Using the design vocabulary of an existing precedent, the Yokohama Port Terminal in Japan, the design expanded to cover most of the existing space and weave between multiple levels via a continuous deck that would allow for full traversability by inhabitants of all physical abilities. The final iteration of the design has specialized topography that provides space for fabrication, (which already happens in the south along the studio entrances), presentation (both in public performance and more private gallery spaces), socialization, and of course, private self-reflection in the deepest recesses of the structure. There, a protruding concrete water wall provides a sonic enclosure to seal patrons off from the nearby wood shop noise, while maintaining connections to the 'outside world' via gradients of light beams through porous decking throughout the upper structure. All of this is achieved without upsetting the general patterns of circulationa which already exist through the site. The project was capped with the fabrication of a bulky, 24x24" model at 1/4" = 1'0" scale, and a collection of drawings to be presented at critiqued final reviews.
