MIDCITY

Following a weekend visit to Los Angeles and the spring quarter's respective site, students were asked to document their initial reactions to the existing conditions and propose possible spatial arrangements for what would become a primary school in the area. Nestled in the heart of the Arts District, the site sits between two repurposed warehouse buildings in a region which has only recently seen a concrete shift from an industrial past to a livable community. My early impressions of the site led me to feel strongly that creating a sincere and safe interface between a new school building and the otherwise abrasive surroundings would allow both the neighborhood and the building to grow together through future interactions between residents and the architecture. Guided by the concept of "interface", I sought to connect various disparate geometries of the site in a monumental and welcoming school environment. Some of these early site studies were intended to evoke the same sense of dizzying complexity that the urban site yielded, while tying elements together with connective elements - a theme which would later play a role in the composition of the school's program as well.
